- Skipping UQ Dance on Wednesdays to get an early night’s sleep
- Trading toe-tapping with bar-hopping (we know moderation is the key to both)
- Uttering the words, “Dancing is lame.” Dancing is the complete opposite of being lame – it’s what you should be doing every Wednesday night!
- End of Semester Dance Party and BBQ
- Movie Nights
- And of course, all of our favourite dance styles!
UQ Dancers, take off those dance shoes, kick your feet back and relax for a week, because UQ Dance takes a break over the mid-semester break. THERE IS NO DANCE TONIGHT, but we’ll see all you rugcutters back next week for Lindy Hop!
Here’s what’s in store for the next four weeks:
Week 10 – Lindy Hop
Week 11 – Hip Hop
Week 12 – Annual General Meeting and PIZZA!
Week 13 – A special treat to be announced
More details on the AGM to come.
So what’s Lindy Hop? Check it out!
You’re havin’-a-little-break Exec
Put on your favourite white collared shirt, grease that hair of yours like there’s no tomorrow and roll your Rs like a Latino, because we’re back in Latin America!
Bachata is a very popular partner dance all over the world, with roots in the Dominican Republic. And luckily for us it’s easy to pick up! So if you’re ready to stow the jitterbuggin’ and get your Latin back on, join us this Wednesday night at the usual time (6:30pm) and same place for an exciting lesson in Bachata.
But now UQ Dance must make a very important announcement. There is a new strain of virus going around Campus, and it’s called ‘BEING LAME’! What? We’re serious!
Common symptoms of ‘being lame’:
The cunning folk among us will realise there is only one cure – going to UQ Dance this week!
So pop some Vitamin C and iron your favourite shirt:
It’s Bachata time!
Your anti-lame and always dancing Exec
6pm at the usual dance spot (not 6:30). Bring $5 for the BBQ and be prepared to get your groove on! Workshops in our favourite swing style, partnered 30s Charleston, and a very special surprise dance routine (you won’t believe your eyes).
So come on down and see what happens when Dancers and Questies boogie on the same dance floor. It’s guaranteed to be spectacular!
What happens when UQ Dance and Quest, arguably two of the most awesome clubs at uni, collide in a spectacular fireball of furious dancing and barbequed roo? You get UQ Dance QUEST – a combination of our two favourite things in the whole wide world: dancing and eating! WHOPEE!
Dancing – workshops of partner 30s Charleston (that shim, sham, shimmying dance straight out of Hollywood) and a very special surprise dance routine (we’ll give you a hint – I was hunting Wolverines. I shot like fifty, GOSH).
Food – $5 for a gourmet BBQ expertly cooked up by our friends from Quest.
The company – Dancers and Questies let loose in the same space. Did someone say…DANCE OFF?
Time and Place – 6pm at the Grassy Knoll (it’s pretty much the same place as our usual dance spot, Dancers. You can’t miss it, we promise!)
And finally, UQ Dance is still on tonight!
We’re expecting a nice cosy number, so we’ll take a vote for the workshop (Either Zouk or Rueda. Or, basically anything goes!). It’ll be a great night to get some one-on-one time with the execs to really nut out any moves you’ve been struggling with. What’s that you say? How do I moon walk? YES, tonight is the time to learn!
So there you go. Time to get your groove on.
Your rug-cutting Exec
So you’re three weeks behind on homework. You have a couple of assignments on…wait what were they? And you’re reading this while in a lecture. Well at UQ Dance we say that’s ok, because you haven’t missed any Zouk! Hooray!
Taught by our very own duo extraordinaire, Nicole and JC, Zouk will introduce you to a whole new Latin dance experience. It’s nothing like Salsa, but boy does it look good! Same time, same place, and as usual you don’t need a partner (meeting new dancers is the best part, right?).
There’s more news - it’s time for our first event of the semester! Head over to New Farm Park this Saturday at noon for a relaxing picnic in the warm winter sun. A big call out to all newcomers at UQ Dance! It’s a great way to meet, socialise and dance with fellow toe-tappers. Details? On Facebook of course!
You bring a plate of food, we bring the tunes. Easy as that!
Salsa at our last picnic!
Remember, it’s never too late in the semester to join in with our workshops or events. We always teach new beginner moves every week so you’ll always be up to speed!
Get ready for another awesome week of dance!
Your almost overly-enthusiastically dance crazed Exec
There were markets. There was dancing. And there was our first exciting workshop. What a way to start semester two!
A shimmying warm welcome to all our new UQ Dancers, the new kids on the dance floor, and welcome back to UQ Dancers from last semester! It was fantastic to see so many of you and so much enthusiasm for our week one Salsa workshop. How lucky were we to have the talented duo, Nicole and JC, show us the seductively smooth moves of Salsa.
If you missed it, don’t fret, because Nicole and JC are back for another week of Salsa! We’ll be learning new beginner moves, so come join us even if you weren’t there last week. And for the seasoned Salsa dancers among us, we’re going to challenge you with an intermediate workshop in conjunction with the beginner workshop. Can you handle the moves?
OUR FIRST PICNIC! Yay!
Saturday 13 August, 12pm-5pm, New Farm Park
It’s a day about stuffing ourselves with glorious picnic snacks, running around the park like crazed Rugcutters, and even just relaxing with all the other UQ Dancers. Of course, there will be dancing – as much as you want because we have all afternoon! Check out our Facebook page for all the details (although food and dance should be all the facts you need, right?).
You bring a plate of food, we bring the tunes. Easy as that!
And here are all the exciting events we have planned for the semester:
Picnic 1 – Saturday 13th August, New Farm Park
UQ Dance/Quest Combined BBQ & Workshop! – Friday 19th August, UQ
Casablanca – Sunday 4th September, Caxton St
Movie Night - Friday 23rd September, UQ
Picnic 2 - Sunday 16th October, New Farm Park
End of Semester Dance Party and BBQ! - Friday 28th October, UQ
We’ll see you tomorrow for Salsa!
Your foot-tappin’ Exec
It’s time to shine your dance shoes, iron your favourite shirt and get your groove on, because UQ Dance is back for Semester 2!
Tomorrow is the big day!
UQ Dance sets up its stall in the Great Court from 10am to 3pm (Wed 27th) for Market Day. And then that very night, we officially launch semester 2 with our first workshop in Salsa taught by the very talented duo, Nicole and JC.
Our workshops are still on Wednesday nights, at the usual spot next to the lolly shop and pharmacy. Arrive from 6pm for a 6:30pm start to our one-hour lesson. Then, dance the night away with social dancing until 9pm. You don’t need any experience and partners are not required – you’ll get to dance with everyone!
Here are some of the things you can look forward to this Semester:
So join us tomorrow – it’s going to be a fantastic day of dance!
Darren and the UQ Dance exec
There’s only one event left for UQ Dance this semester, and it’s big! We’ve hired out the Holt Room, and we’re firing up the barbeque, so there’s every reason you should grab your dancing shoes and get ready to celebrate the end of a fantastic semester with us!
Friday 3 June
5:30pm – FREE Barbeque for UQ Dancers (usual dance spot)
7:00-10:00pm – Dance Party! (in the Holt Room)
From Darren, Grevo, Jake, Angelo, Melody, Ania and Kevin, thanks for helping us make Wednesday nights our favourite night of the week.
See you tomorrow!
Here’s something a little different:
Good morning Baltimore! And all the jazz. The Bronx is up and the Battery down. Whether you’re a brother or whether you’re a mother. I just met a girl named Maria. You’re the one that I want! What a glorious feeling, I’m happy again!
Can you pick the seven movie musicals from the partial song lyrics above? It’s a question that should haunt you at night, at least tonight, because the UQ Dance Movie Night 2 is tomorrow night! What a mouthful! So if you’re a fan of popcorn, cheesy dance movies and lazing around, join us for what will be an incredibly relaxing time in front of the big screen. Now excuse me while I butter the popcorn.
Friday 27 May at 6:30pm in the Science Learning Centre (SLC), Building 69 (Priestly)
So you know a little salsa. A girl’s turn, a guy’s turn and some pouting. But are you ready to learn some of the sexier moves that make salsa the world’s most popular partner dance? Come on down this Wednesday (even the rugby won’t stop us!) and we’ll show you some moves that will be sure to impress.
Thank you, Amy and Peter, for a swingin’ Lindy Hop lesson last week. We were all impressed by how quickly almost all of you picked it up. But if you found yourself scratching your head wondering what on earth a triple step is, you’re not alone because Lindy is one of the toughest partner dances you can learn. Well done to everyone!
EVENT. After a very successful picnic two weeks ago, we can’t wait for our last movie night of the semester. As you might know, movie nights are all about chillaxing, watching a corny dance movie and eating plenty of popcorn. This Friday night, May 27th, at 6:30pm in the Science Learning Centre.
END OF SEMESTER DANCE PARTY.
Pull on your dance shoes (or any shoes really, minus stilettos) and get ready to party! And the best part, it’s indoor! Join us in the Holt Room (right next to the Pizza Caffe) on the last Friday before swotvac, June 3rd, for our final event of the semester, and help us go out with a bang! Time TBA.
Two weeks to go, two Wednesdays left and two events to look forward to. Ever been gladder to be a UQ Dancer?
