Week 13 – Go out in style in our last week of dance!

This is it, everybody! We’ll see you for the last Wednesday night of the semester in the normal place outside the Lolly Shop at 6:30pm tomorrow night! Our 2011 President, Darren, is going to go out in style by teaching us to Shim Sham and an awesome disco routine called the Hustle!

Then for one last dance, come along to our end of year party on Friday night! We have the Holt Room (opposite the Pizza Cafe) booked from 6:30pm, where we’re providing a free BBQ for all dancers! If free food isn’t enough, we have access to a real dance floor that won’t eat the soles of your favourite shoes! Come along, have a dance, bid farewell to our 2011 executives and congratulate our 2012 team!

Here’s a shout out to Andrew, our 2012 President, and his execs! Good luck!

Peace out, y’all.

Melissa.

UQ Dance ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

It’s an exciting time of the year – the UQ Dance Annual General Meeting. Soon, every member of our fantastic dance club will have the chance to participate in choosing the executive for 2012. Exciting stuff!

Executive positions are open to everyone, and voting will be done by a show of hands on the night. And of course, let’s not forget the FREE PIZZA for every UQ Dance member who shows up on the night and votes.

Here’s the low-down on official side of UQ Dance.

Dance lessons followed by social dancing are run every Wednesday night of the teaching semester (that’s 13 weeks in total each semester). In addition, events are run throughout the semester (such as picnics, movie nights and the end of semester party).

The seven members of the Executive are split into two groups: the Main Committee and the General Executive.

Main Committee (general voting rights) - President, Treasurer, Secretary

General Executive (limited voting Rights) – Male Troupe Leader, Female Troupe Leader, Events Coordinator, Club Assistant

Running for a Position

Anyone who wishes to run for a position should prepare a short talk/speech detailing why you want to run and what you can bring to the position. Nominations should be emailed to executive@uqdance.net by Tuesday the 18th of October (6pm). If you have any further queries please contact either Darren or myself (Jake) by email at president@uqdance.net or secretary@uqdance.net.

We’ll also be giving the new exec team a healthy helping hand, so if you’re a bit worried about the rules running the club then don’t be. James Hudson at the UQUnion will also be inducting senior exec members in the new year (particularly Treasurers). The Union also provides plenty of guidelines about the running of clubs so there’s no reason not to run!

Elections will be run in order of precedent (i.e. President, Treasurer, Secretary, Troupe Leaders, Events, Club Assistant). If you are unsuccessful for one position you may run for another.

Week 11 – Can’t Touch This. I mean Hip Hop, whaddup!

Feel the beat, folks, it’s Hip Hop week at UQ Dance! 6:30pm in the usual place by the Lolly Shop; be there or be square! Can I get a “fo’ shizzle”?! Don’t forget that social dancing starts after the lesson until 9, and then some of us usually head over to the Red Room for karaoke – we’d love to have you along!

Also, be sure to inscribe on our calendars (in bold type) the final UQ Dance Picnic of the year on Sunday 16th at New Farm Park.

Then, of course, there’s the usual weekly line-up:

Thursday: West Coast Swing at Greenslopes, and Soul’sa Thursdays at Cloudland!

Friday: Salsa at the end of Queen Street Mall by the casino, and a new addition: Latin on a real dance floor at Brazilian Touch on Park Rd in Milton! This starts around 8:30pm and really heats up by 9:30, and some very talented dancers show up there! It’s a great opportunity to social dance and learn something new!

Sunday: Zouk and Salsa at Casablanca in Paddington! With 2 different floors, you’re bound to find some music to really groove to!

See you on the dance floor!

Last Uq Dance Picnic for 2011

Hullo Dancers!!!

PICNIC TIME!

Our events are a great way to meet people from UQ dance without conversations being interrupted by the words ‘high five and change partners’. This is the last UQ dance picnic of the semester and second last event of the year, so you don’t want to miss it!!! (Seriously, you really don’t)

The picnic will be held on October 16th, at New Farm Park, near the ferry terminal. Just follow the sound of the music, and top taps. (The UQ dance banner may also be sighted in this general vicinity).

Remember to bring a plate of food to share, sunscreen, hats, sunnies, balls, picnic activities, picnic rugs, and of course feel free to bring friends.

Hope to see you all there!
Melody

Week 10 – Back to old school Hollywood with the Lindy Hop!

Dust off your fedoras, folks; it’s time to get your swing on again!

Our Prez Darren and his lovely assistant Alyssa are going to teach everyone how to lindy hop the night away this coming Wednesday night! If you’ve ever seen us spinning until we’re dizzy to a jazzy tune and wished you could too, this is the week for you! Suit up, polish your two tone shoes, and dig out your waistcoat – we’ll see you at the usual place at 6:30pm!

Be sure to bring your appetite to New Farm Park on Sunday the 16th for our final picnic of the year! A plate of something delicious, a picnic rug, and a Frisbee wouldn’t go astray either! These picnics are not-to-be-missed events, for new friends, new moves, and bizarre antics you’ll never forget!

For those of you who need a dance hit more than once a week:

If you dig the swing style, West Coast Swing holds classes in Greenslopes on Thursday nights – Grevo’s the man to ask for more details. If you’d rather get into a Zouk groove, head on over to Cloudland in the Valley for their weekly Soul’sa Thursday!

Radcliffe Place (in front of the bridge to South Bank near the casino) plays host to free salsa music every Friday night for the Latinites among us!

Casablanca in Paddington is the place to be on a Sunday night. Salsa, cha cha, and bachata are prevalent in the downstairs area from 8:00pm, and zouk starts upstairs at 9. Bring your dance shoes; it’s a much smoother floor!

See you all on Wednesday night, hep cats!

Week 7 – Feelin’ smooth? Then West Coast Swing!

Welcome West Side – you’re in for a treat this week! Ever wondered what a dance lesson taught by the pros would be like? Well this week we’re handing the reigns over to two of our favourite guest teachers, Allan and Holly, from Raw Connection West Coast Swing. They’ve run fantastic workshops at UQ Dance for the last four semesters, and we’re lucky enough to have them back for another schwingin’ good one!

Come on down at 6:20pm at the usual spot next to the lolly shop and bakery to experience a highly polished and very entertaining professional lesson. We exec love it, and we’re sure you Dancers will too!

Stay up to date and join in the dance craze on our Facebook page.

Your oh so smooth west coasting Exec

Week 6 – Get your Bachata on!

Put on your favourite white collared shirt, grease that hair of yours like there’s no tomorrow and roll your Rs like a Latino, because we’re back in Latin America!

Bachata is a very popular partner dance all over the world, with roots in the Dominican Republic. And luckily for us it’s easy to pick up! So if you’re ready to stow the jitterbuggin’ and get your Latin back on, join us this Wednesday night at the usual time (6:30pm) and same place for an exciting lesson in Bachata.

But now UQ Dance must make a very important announcement. There is a new strain of virus going around Campus, and it’s called ‘BEING LAME’! What? We’re serious!

Common symptoms of ‘being lame’:

  • Skipping UQ Dance on Wednesdays to get an early night’s sleep
  • Trading toe-tapping with bar-hopping (we know moderation is the key to both)
  • Uttering the words, “Dancing is lame.” Dancing is the complete opposite of being lame – it’s what you should be doing every Wednesday night!

The cunning folk among us will realise there is only one cure – going to UQ Dance this week!

So pop some Vitamin C and iron your favourite shirt:

It’s Bachata time!

Check our Facebook page or our website if you’re ever wondering what’s coming up for UQ Dance.

Your anti-lame and always dancing Exec

UQ Dance QUEST combined event is tonight!

6pm at the usual dance spot (not 6:30). Bring $5 for the BBQ and be prepared to get your groove on! Workshops in our favourite swing style, partnered 30s Charleston, and a very special surprise dance routine (you won’t believe your eyes).

So come on down and see what happens when Dancers and Questies boogie on the same dance floor. It’s guaranteed to be spectacular!
